The Welcome Indifference of
Cool Marble

Worn hands in the dairy.
Endless mornings in darkness and cold,
where the only cries are animal.
Here is the indifference of cool marble.

A raven’s scream
reminds her of other noises.
They are with her always.
Torn bodies slit with multiple mouths.
Crying out.
Smashed bones, blooming skin.
Crying out.

Then, she wrapped competence around
herself around a cloak.

Then, she shut her ears to the sounds,
hearing only congratulations,
wonder that a woman could be
so . . .
so . . .
so . . . at home on the battlefield.

Some sounds become engraved into a mind.
She is at home now.
She would rather plunge her hands into milk than blood.
